A coupled movement and bioenergetics model to explore the spawning migration of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

Adult anchovies in the Bay of Biscay perform north to south migration from late winter to early summer for spawning. However, what triggers and drives the geographic shift of the population remains unclear and poorly understood. An individual-based fish model has been implemented to explore the potential mechanisms that control anchovy's movement routes toward its spawning habitats. To achieve this goal, two fish movement behaviors – gradient detection through restricted area search and kinesis – simulated fish response to its dynamic environment. Application of a bioenergetic growth model to larvae of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera L. ArchiMer

We applied, for the first time, a dynamic energy budget (DEB) growth model to the larval phase in the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingii (Linnaeus, 1758) to evaluate the impact of spatio-temporal variation in the atoll lagoon environment on its capacity for development. The specific parameters of the model, which represent ingestion, temperature effect and the relationship between length and biovolume of the larvae, were determined from experiments or taken from the literature. Integration of bioenergetics in an individual-based model to hindcast anchovy dynamics in the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

The population of European anchovy of the Bay of Biscay collapsed at the beginning of the 21st century, causing the closure of its fishery between 2005 and 2010. In order to study both the human and environmental causes of the anchovy population dynamics, an approach coupling individual bioenergetics to an individual-based model was applied between 2000 and 2015. This modelling framework was forced with outputs from a physical–biogeochemical model. Bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from interactions between physiological factors (growth, weight loss, absorption and accumulation), chemical factors (metal concentration, speciation and bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature and food concentration). To account for such interactions in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, we combined bioaccumulation and Dynamic Energy Budget models. Field experiments were conducted to measure uptake and elimination kinetics for two metals (Hg and Pb) in three Mediterranean sites with differences in contamination levels, and to calibrate the models. Use of dynamic energy budget and individual based models to simulate the dynamics of cultivated oyster populations ArchiMer

We successfully tested a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model of the oyster Crassostrea gigas using published environmental data and growth data collected in Than lagoon (France). Estimates of most DEB parameters were based on independent datasets and only two parameters were calibrated using our datasets: the shape parameter, which was used to convert body volume into shell length, and the half-saturation coefficient, which controlled the functional response of assimilation to food concentration, represented by chlorophyll-a concentration. The DEB model proved to be robust and generic: it was able to reproduce oyster growth in Than lagoon and other ecosystems.
